JUNIOR
DRAG BIKE and CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT The opening round of the 2007 season for the Junior Drag Bikes got under way at Shakespeare County Raceway’s Springspeed national Drag races; round two of the UK National Championships. With 4 teams contesting the round, qualifying over the two day period was always going to be tight. Eventually, the top honour went to defending champ Scott Collier taking his 50cc Yamaha Junior Jade machine to a creditable 13.252 over the eighth against his 13.2 dial-in. Giselle Moor took her 125cc Yamaha Majestic into second (12.705) followed by the Honda 125 single cylinder 4 stroke Pro Mod bike of Jake Carruthers (12.761) and Tyler Clutterbuck (13.681). Sadly for the teams after two excellent days of racing and sun, the weather took a turn for the worst with only a very few round 1 eliminations being run. Fortunately, Junior Drag Bike was one of them with both Scott and Giselle taking the round wins; 13.28/47.67 on a 12.90 dial and 13.01/54.15 on a 12.30 dial respectively. Both were competition singles to the final. Round two of the series, again at Shakespeare County Raceway saw two teams returning back to the track in May for a two-day Public Track Day Street Car event; Scott Collier and Jake Carruthers . With qualifying and eliminations completed in a matter of hours it was young Jake who pushed his Honda Pro Mod machine to the winner’s circle where the trophies were presented by ‘Laffin Gas’ rocket car driver, Carolynn Campbell. Best times and speeds were 11.863 at 55.90 in favour of Jake and a 12.954 at 48.39 mph for Scott. In amongst loads and loads of minis populating the venue were four Junior Drag Bike teams contesting round three at the British Mini Showdown sponsored by lane sponsors Motorshack. Again, qualifying was going to be tight with both Scott and new kid on the block Jordan Bissell riding his Yamaha 50cc Areox fighting it out for the number one spot. In the end it was Scott by mere fractions of a second on his last qualifier of 13.214 on a 13.15 dial. Second was Jordan Third was the 125cc Yamaha of Giselle Moor with a 12.800 second time and Tyler was in number four spot. With qualifying conducted in summery conditions, overnight it turn very sour indeed with everyone waking up at 3.00am in the morning to the sound of heavy rain that didn’t clear until well into the afternoon signalling the end of the weekend. However, even though there were no winners as such, Motorshack proprietor Steve Wood was kind enough to present the trophies to the rounds quickest two qualifiers; Jordan and Scott. With such along wait between rounds everyone was praying for fine weather for SCR’s Open Sport Nationals which was duly rewarded with three excellent days of qualifying and racing. Topping the timing sheets was Giselle with a 12.341 on a 13.30 dial followed by Jordan’s 14.581 (14.450), Scott with a 13.138 (13.00) and Tyler on a 10.75 dial in resulting in a 10.972. Round one commenced with Tyler taking out Giselle at the top end with an 11.081/57.54 to a losing 12.532/52.20 while Scott’s 13.312 on his 13.30 index put paid to Jordan’s 14.595. In the final run-off it was Tyler taking the round points with Junior Jade Scott coming in runner up. So the championship ends with Scott Collier retaining his JB1 plate, Tyler Clutterbuck second, Giselle Moor third, Jake Carruthers fourth and rookie Jordan Bissell coming in as JB5. Thanks to all the people who helped Junior Bike this year, first of all Julia Wilcox, Jerry Cookson and everyone at Shakespeare County Raceway, Dave and Charlotte Beck for sponsoring the class, Steve Wood at Motorshack, Stephen Wexler at Eclipse Photos, Carl at Turnertech for his help and commitment to the junior bike web site over the last few years (www.juniordragbike.co.uk) and Ozzy at WTD for stepping into Carl's shoes and carrying on the great work for us. Last but most importantly, a huge THANKS to all the riders and parents for making this such a great racing and great fun year. |

With both publicity and popularity of Junior Drag Bikes in the UK on the increase, the ACU (Auto Cycle Union) in-house magazine Sport-Moto has just published a half page feature written and photographed by veteran photo journalist Dick Parnham. The half page article provides readers from other motorcycle disciplines an insight into how the class has progressed, what’s involved for anyone considering joining up together with the visual impact made on a recent BBC Sportsround programme filmed at Shakespeare County Raceway with APIRA Ultimate Power Junior Drag Bike Champion, nine year old Scott Collier. |

13/11/06 Season Review by Jerry Cookson Topping the five bike entry was Worcester based Dan Baldwin; another rising star from the ever expanding Baldwin dynasty. Onboard a 123cc Yamaha machine built by his racing father Dave, Dan posted a time of 11.025 at 66 mph over the eighth mile to push Andrew Irvine’s 125cc Honda VTR Shadow into second (13.606/51.90). Unfortunately for the organisers, Sunday’s racing was cancelled due to yet more rain after the first rounds of eliminations had been completed handing wins to Tyler, Scott and Michael Rowe. The next race, again at Shakespeare County, saw the same awesome five return for the Shakespeare Nationals and with it five rounds of qualifying all held in perfect sunny conditions. Topping the qualifying charts on this occasion was Scott’s 50cc SYM Jet Automatic powered drag bike which, on the outside, is a scaled down replica of his father Jerry’s world record holding RD400. From the 5 qualifiers completed a 13.361 was on the right side of his dial-in of 13.30 to give the nine year old the coveted number one spot. Second to Scott was Andrew‘s ‘PYPson‘ Honda. Dad Don very wisely dialed in a 12.0 to run close to it with a 12.2. Third was ‘Dangerous Dan’ with a 10.86 on a 10.5 dial followed by the Jakester’s Pro Mod and Tyler’s custom made machine built by mum and Fuel Harley rider Wendy Clutterbuck. Being number one qualifier race day’s opening round gifted Scott with an unopposed bye into the semi finals where he would meet Jake who, in his opening round, dispatched Dan Baldwin, 12.612 (12.50) to Once again Scott proved to be the young tough cookie he is by running a 13.342 on a 13.20 dial-in against Andrews’s breakout 12.232 (12.50 dial-in). The final was all Scott as dad Jerry wrote on the dial-in board 13.20 and ran 13.27. In fact it must have been close at the finish with Andrew dialing in a 12.0 to run an almost perfect 12.083. To top the weekend off Scott received his trophy from announcer Paul Venners together with some pocket money. A few days later Scott was in the news again by having his photo placed on the American news magazine web site www.dragracingonline.com. The third and final round brought all the riders together for the Open Sports Nationals; a three day festival of drag racing and hot rodding. But like all best laid plans, rain intervened on finals day preventing the Junior class from being completed. Top qualifier again was Scott on a near perfect 13.36 on a With the season all but wrapped up all that remains now is for the awards to be presented to Scott and Andrew in February at the APIRA/SPRC Presentation in Northampton and Junior Drag Bike will be there to record the occasion.

2/11/06 The “Junior-scene” for now in Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia is that Junior Drag bike will be an official class (in Sweden) for 2007. At this moment we have about 10 (5 boys, 5 girls!!) riders participating and there will be more to come. I am expecting a huge success and even the Swedish Motorcycle Federation has shown a big interest. I’m working on the translation of the rules, and I think you will find some interesting ideas there.

24/10/06 Sharron Collier, team member and mum to APIRA Junior Drag Bike Champion Scott says that the team, and especially Scott, had a lot of fun learning to be a TV star at Shakespeare County Raceway recently. "Scott wasn’t too sure about having to say the lines, and he had to explain to them that it is actually called a burnout not a rev-up!" says Sharron. "BBC Sportsround producer Abi and cameraman Jim had a really good day, and said they enjoyed it very much. Thanks to Jerry and Julie and all the staff at Shakespeare County Raceway, we know you work wonders.

23/10/06 Capitalising on Saturday’s TV stardom, the Collier family, along with Shakespeare County Raceway’s Marketing & Promotions man Jerry Cookson, were on hand to promote Junior Drag Bikes www.juniordragbike.co.uk at the 13th annual Classic Mechanics Motorcycle Show www.classicbikeshows.com held at the Stafford County Showground last weekend, writes Sharron Collier. The stand featured the Junior Bikes of current number one Scott Collier, Jake Carruthers, Andrew Irvine and Michael Rowe alongside a full size practice tree with a reaction tester. This, as you can imagine, generated lots of interest. Many people had not seen Junior Drag Bikes before and were keen to come a long to the raceway and see them in action. We also met Super Twin racers from previous years, keen contenders hoping to take up the sport in the future, and interested onlookers who just wanted to come along to watch the racing from the grandstands. The general feeling after the show was one of achievement and success with lots of our literature and information sheets being handed out. Indeed, so much was the demand that we had to enlisted Baz and Scott in search of a photocopier on Sunday morning. The highlight of the weekend came when we found we had won the award for ‘Best Trade Stand’, and Scott was presented with a plaque from eleven times British Road Racing Champion, Roger Marshall. A great day to an enjoyable and hopefully fruitful event. Many thanks to the organisers of the show Classic Bike Shows for again inviting us along, and thanks also to Baz of Jade Racing, Don and Andrew Irvine and Julie from Shakespeare County Raceway who all did a stint on the stand at various times during the two days.
